Selenium and Vitamin E may offer protection against prostate cancer by changing the expression of certain genes in the prostate linked to tumors says a new study from Texas. Writing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Scientists from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston report that exposure of biopsy samples from people with cancer to Vitamin E, Selenium or both, expressed different genes, with the combined exposure producing results similar to that observed in people with no prostate cancer. “To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first detailed systematic pathological interrogation to be completed in preoperative patients with favorable risk prostate cancer.” Wrote lead author Dimitria Tsavachidou.

Recommendations to increase folic acid intakes during the early stages of pregnancy may reduce mental and emotional health problems in children, according to a new study. Dutch researchers report that the children of mothers who took folic acid supplements during pregnancy were better at internalizing and externalizing problems, compared to the children of mothers who did not take supplements, according to findings published in the British Journal of Nutrition. The research adds to the mother and child benefits of folic acid, in addition to the established link at reducing the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs).
